Critique #4 - Video Games
In the video by Anita Sarkeesian she describes the different components of how women are seen and portrayed in video games. I do not play video games, however I have seen ads in New York City and other metropolitan areas for major video games like Grand Theft Auto which is a racing game but legitimately degrades women and police officers. Although it does have a explicit rating most parents of children have no knowledge of the true meaning behind this racing game.
“At the same time that we allow our children to be sexualized, we refuse to educate them about sex. The United States is the only developed nation in the world that doesn’t teach sex education in the schools. And our children pay a very high price we have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and the highest rates of sexually transmitted illnesses by far, in the developed world.” In this quote it relates to what Sarkeesian was saying, these women are portrayed so negatively that kids think its ok to be around or to imitate the acts of violence.
“[The Media] is about creating a certain environment of images that we grow up in and become used to. After a while these images begin to [slowly and cumulatively] shape what we know and what we understand about the world.” This quote relates to the video and GTA because of how children are growing up and being exposed to certain things. Its like they become prone or used to playing such games.
My thoughts are basically identical to hers. I see the same things in the videos that she is describing and its unfortunate that it is a "trend" amongst hundreds of thousands of video games. I have seen a lot of negative things more than positive. For example, things being rewarded in video games such as "making boobs bigger when you achieve a higher level." It angers me that it is even a thing, not only because of the meaning behind it, but that is not how life works and it should absolutely not be viewed by children of a young age.
